You can’t use dryer duct for a combustion appliance, ever!  It’s just nor safe.  You can only use flex duct when it is protected inside a flue.  For this one, the water heater has to be above the furnace flue and it has to have a continuous up slope.  Some times we should just call an HVAC guy and in that way we protect the kids.
